What do your best days look like?

Is it when things come easy? Or is it when things get difficult, and you still manage to get things done?

It’s natural to fantasize about things just going your way. To dream of winning the lottery.

Everyone knows wishing on a star is not a strategy. But that’s how a lot of people do life. They begin in response mode. Their inbox determines their day.

Then, they wonder why things didn’t turn out the way they were hoping.

The alternative doesn’t sound that much better either, though. Are our best days really when we somehow white-knuckle our way through the storm? I might feel accomplished, but I’m still in response mode.

In our last installment, I suggested that the path to building a great culture at work, not to mention a great life personally, is to have a bias toward choosing hard things.

People who delay gratification in the short term tend to have an easier go in the long term. But, tragically, folks who make easy choices in the short term pay for it for the rest of their lives.

By that logic, you might be guessing that today’s newsleader will be more of the same: Want to craft your perfect day? Choose hard things all day long. Then, if you manage to get through it, you win!

“That sounds like fun,” as she unsubscribes sarcastically.

So, what do you do if you don’t feel like choosing hard things all the freaking time?

What if you still want a great day, but you’re not interested in a beat down to get it?

Today’s conversation invites a simple decision that gets you what you’re looking for.

It anticipates the challenges you’ll face and sets you up before putting out fires.

Nine times out of ten, it will deliver delight on the daily.

Here it is…

Establish your immovable object.

Here’s how it works: (1) Lock in an intentional and meaningful behavior that you’ll do every day as soon as you wake up. Then, (2) never miss a day.

That’s it.

Your immovable object can be anything you like, as long as it sets the table for you to feel good about your day. The quirkier, the better. If it’s uncommon, you’ll feel special.

The magic is that you’re the initiator. It’s not a passive response. It’s an active start in service to giving you your best days. Here are a few options to get your juices flowing:

  • When the alarm goes off, make your feet hit the ground before the third beep or buzz.
  • Ban your phone from the room you sleep in and don’t get out of bed until you get a minimum of 7 hours.
  • Cut open a lemon, squeeze it into 12 ozs of cold water, and drink it before communicating with another human being.
  • Don’t talk to anyone until you’ve started your day with a cold shower.

It doesn’t so much matter what you choose. All that matters is that (a) you choose it and (b) that you never miss a day.

That’s what immovable means. It doesn’t move. It comes first. Everything else fits around it.

My immovable object started with flossing my teeth — every single day.

I guarantee it will happen because I’m committed to it before I go pee. The only days I’ve ever missed are if I run out of floss.

I’m not special. I don't want my days to be fantastic more than most people.

It's that I gain traction. It's the natural result of taking agency over even the tiniest part of my life. My immovable object gives me momentum. Then I launch from there.

There are people at this very moment scouring podcasts, amazon reviews, and google searches trying to find the keys to having a great day.

They’re more interested in the search than putting what they already have in hand to work. You have everything you need to get started today. No purchase necessary.

Pick your thing. Make it immovable. Don’t renegotiate it for 14 days.

What’s at stake

Nobody has to do what I’m describing. It’s optional — a “get to.”

We all know that everyone who puts themselves in motion with their immovable object gains an unfair advantage.

Ever try to push a 5-pound rope?

How about getting behind a rolling thousand-pound car?

Being in motion is highly underrated.
